MBA in India

Whether this is early-career professionals wanting to increase their business experience, mid-career professionals wishing to move functions, industries, or locations, or professionals with entrepreneurial ambitions, the MBA has a place in the career goals of a broad group of people. What contributes to its appeal is that a student from any education background – engineering, medical, business, law, or arts – may pursue an MBA and benefit from the theoretical, practical, and peer learning that the programme provides. While most renowned business schools outside of India have a university connection and provide an MBA degree, the situation in India is significantly different. The country’s more than 4,000 business schools fall into one of five categories: those connected with public or private universities and coming under the purview of UGC; independent institutes authorized by AICTE; institutions administered by the MHRD; institutes sponsored by individual ministries; and a few autonomous institutes. All UGC-approved schools, as well as a few others, supervised by the MHRD, award MBA degrees to students. Other MHRD schools, as well as all AICTE-managed schools, provide a Post Graduate Diploma in Management to students (PGDM). Post Graduate Programme (PGP) certification is offered by autonomous colleges such as the Indian School of Business (ISB). However, when it comes to industry recognition and the job market, both an MBA and a PGDM/PGP are considered equivalent by Indian companies. But what’s more important is the business school’s reputation. In 2021, the Financial Times Global MBA Ranking, long regarded as the holy grail of MBA rankings, included five Indian MBA programmes. ISB was placed first, in 23rd place, followed by IIM Bangalore in 35th and IIM Calcutta in 44th. The Indian representation in the top 100 is completed by IIM Ahmedabad and IIM Indore. The growth of Indian business schools is also reflected in the increasing number of accreditations, which show the quality of management education available at management colleges. AACSB, one of the world’s most prestigious accreditations, has honoured 14 Indian business schools, including IIM Lucknow, XLRI, SPJIMR, IMT Ghaziabad, and NMIMS, for their dedication to excellence.
